More on the Wonder Gardens History and Future
For nearly nine decades, The Wonder Gardens has delighted visitors with an inspiring, educational, and engaging experience of rescued, rehabilitated and non-releasable birds and reptiles, banyan trees and tropical flora and fauna. Originally established in 1936 by the Piper family, the Reptile Gardens, as they were then known, served as a welcome diversion for travelers journeying along old Route 41, the famed Tamiami Trail. It draws visitors in to appreciate nature and wildlife through a nostalgic experience that honors the distinct essence of Old Florida.
Now owned by the City of Bonita Springs, The Wonder Gardens is managed by a nonprofit organization, Bonita Wonder Gardens, that is responsible for the care of its animals and the maintenance of a 2.5-acre botanical garden.
In the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Ian, The Wonder Gardens leadership developed a master plan committed to articulating a bold yet sustainable vision to guide the organization over the next three years with continued improvements including new exhibits, programs and experiences. One improvement will be building a new animal care center to safeguard the health and wellness of resident animals and position the Wonder Gardens for future accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
With these planned initiatives demonstrating its bold vision and a commitment to honoring its legacy as an iconic representation of Old Florida at its best, the Wonder Gardens will ensure its relevancy and sustainability as a beloved community institution and the heart of Bonita Springs.
